| Objective. Knowing about the characteristics and epidemic of chronic diseases affecting urban and rural residents in a South-Anhui mountainous area, and providing an evidence-based chronic basis for a chronic disease prevention strategy in the unit of community. Methods A cluster random sampling was adopted. One street of a city and two villages were randomly selected as the scene for the investigation in three areas and four counties of a southern city in Anhui Province, and there were a total of 21 survey scenes, with 50 households randomly selected within each survey scene. After necessary training, professionals summoned by the district (county) CDC surveyed all members of the family household on 10 to 20 in March 2009, employing the home-made healthy questionnaire. There were 1045 households and a total of 3288 people in the actual survey.Resultsâ‘ The prevalence rate of chronic diseases in this South-Anhui Mountain Area is 7.8%, with 11.1% for urban dwellers, 6.5% for rural residents, 8.8% for males, 6.8% for females, 24.7% for over 55 years old population, 14.6% for population with primary or lower education, 20.3% for population in abnormal marital status(divorced, widowed), and 38.9% for retired population.â‘¡Sorting prevalence rate of a certain chronic disease in descending order. The prevalence rates of hypertension, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, diabetes and gallbladder stones (inflammation) for urban and rural residents in this South-Anhui Mountain Area were between 0.4% - 3.8%, respectively. The five chronic diseases with the highest prevalence rate for urban residents are blood pressure, diabetes, bronchitis, heart disease, with their incidence rate being between 6.9% -0.5%, and those for rural residents are blood pressure, bronchitis, heart disease, hypertension with the gallbladder and diabetes, with their prevalence rates being between 2.7%-0.4%.â‘¢A Logistic regression analysis reveals that gender, age, employment and self-evaluation on health are among the significant influencing factors. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of chronic diseases for the population in South of Anhui Province is lower than the national average. Prevalence rate of population over 55 is 6.635 times that of the population over 15. The possibility for females to suffer from those diseases is 0.663 times that for males. Compared with farmers, the occupations of officials (OR=0.320), and workers (OR=0.458) are the protective factors from suffering chronic diseases. Compared with self-rated health status good, self-rated health status of the general (OR = 3.097) and poor (OR = 23.455) are risk factors. Suggestion: We could learn from the success of domestic chronic disease prevention and control experience, and carry out community-based prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, all of which are dominated by health education. Continuous, coordinated, accessible community-integrated health guidance on chronic disease prevention and treatment services also serves as a good supplement. |
