Objectives To determine the distribution character of serum uric acid (UA) and the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) and atrial fibrillation (Af) at community population in Taiyuan, and analyze the association between UA, HUA and Af. Explore whether UA as an independent risk factor of Af, to provide foundation for etiological study and build the prevent strategy of Af.Methods This cross-sectional study was performed in 8871 members aged 36 ~ 85 years old in Taiyuan (men: 2826;women: 6045; age: 55.70±12.37 years). All persons underwent an investigation composed of a standardized questionnaire, physical and biochemical examination. In this study, the patients of Af were 84 cases (men: 30; women: 54; age: 66.52±8.59 years). The persons were divided into 5 groups according to age (36~45,46~55,56~65,65~75,76~85 years), and to analyze the distribution character of UA/HUA. The level of UA was divided by quartile. Using the stratify analysis and the logistic regression analysis to adjust the confounding factors and to explore the relationship between UA and Af.Results (1) The level of UA at men was higher than the women, and the highest at >36 year group. The level of UA was increased with age at women group (P<0.05). The proportion of HUA patients at men was higher than women (14.8% vs11.1%, P <0.05). Prevalence of Af at highest quartile of UA and HUA groups were higher than others at male group, but the deference had not statistically significant (P>0.05). The prevalence of Af was increased with the level of UA at female group, and the proportion of Af at HUA group was higher than non-HUA group (P<0.05). (2) Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that age (OR=1.175), coronary heart disease (OR=1.026), valvular disease (OR=15.011), BMI (OR=1.132) were independent predictors of AF at men; Age (OR=1.183), valvular disease (OR=17.035), hs-CRP (OR=1.015) and high serum UA levels (OR=1.025) were independent predictors of AF at women. In UA groups, the hazard ratio for Af at highest quartile was 2.016 times greater than lowest quartile levels. Conclusions UA was related to Af closely at the people who over the age of 35. UA may be an independent risk factor for atrial fibrillation at women.
