Objective:To compare and evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Traditional Chinese Medicine for patients with rectal cancer. Methods:The literature search, study selection and assessment, data collection and analysis were undertaken according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions published from 1980 to 2007.Randomised controlled trials(RCTs) and quasi-RCTs and prospective non-randomised current controlled trials investigating traditional chinese medicine as externally applied agent in the treatment of rectal cancer were collected, regardless of blinding, language, and publicafion status. The RCT articles included were evaluated by reliability, allocation, concealment and Jadad scale. The NRCT was evaluated according to appendix 4.Then make a system review and Meta-analysis. Evaluation indications include the effective power, relative risk (RR) were used to evaluate the dichotomous data. Fixed model evaluation was selected if the chi-square test for heterogeneity P>0.05, otherwise random model evaluation. Results:Eight studies involving 653 patients were included. Among all these paticles, seven studies are RCT and one is NRCT with prospective non-randomised current controlled trials.Efficient power of the Traditional Chinese medicine for external application for symdrome relieving is RR=2.72,95%CI[1.31,5.66], decreasing the side effect rate of chemotherapy is RR=2.97,95%CI[1.27,6.97].It can shorten the time of perineum Wound Healing [one article is 42.4d,the other is (21.1±8.2)d]comparing with controll group for postoperative patients who have received the Mile's operation. It could also restore the activity of CD3,CD4,CD4/ CD8,NK cell, reduce the activity of CD8 and invation of tumor obviously in combination with 5-FU.Conclusion:The Traditional Chinese Medicine was effective in overall syndrome relieve, time to progression, degrading and reducing the side effect of the chemotherapy. The Traditional Chinese Medicine showed a higher response rate and was associated with lower toxicities. But the effect of traditonal Chinese medicine needs further researsh to prove,Because the collection literature is not high quality and the Proof is not strong enough, it is needed to be approved by the big swatch and the high quality multi-centers controlled trial further by randomized and double blind.
