ObjectiveCongenital hypothyroidism (CH) is a common endocrine disease with low intelligence and physical development in children. By screening of newborn CH from 2006 to 2009 in Meizhou, we investigated the incidence and high risk factors of CH. Screening for CH could identify these who suffered from CH earlier in order to treat it in time and improve the level of child health care.Method103455 newborns were screened for CH. Three drops of blood were taken from heels of newborns about 72 hours after birth to the Filter papers, and make it dry to test blood levels of TSH by FEIA method. Newborns with probable positive were recalled and draw out 2ml venous blood to test the serum level of thyronine(T3), thyroxine(T4) and TSH by chemiluminesence. The abnormal criterion was that the level of T3,T4 was under the normal range and the level of TSH was above the normal range. Surveying the parents of the CH sufferers by questionnaire and all statements related to newborns screening and case information were made descriptive and use SPSS 13.0 software to statistical inference.ResultsAmong the 103455 screened cases in Meizhou,63 cases were diagnosed as CH, and the morbidity rate was 1:1642. Among these sufferers,33 were boys,30 were girls. Male and female incidence ratio was about 1.1:1. Compared the morbidity rate in Meizhou with that of nationwide(1:3009).χ2 test result showed that p<0.01 (χ2=23.0310, p=0.0000),this indicated that there was significant difference. Compared the morbidity rate of Meizhou with that of other cities in Guangdong, which in Meizhou city was higher than those of Guangzhou city and Zhanjiang city (P=0.0000, P=0.0004).Among of them, those of Xingning,Jiaoling,Wuhua,Fengshun,Dapu is higher than those of Meizhou urban field (P<0.05)Conclusion This study showed the high morbidity rates of CH in Meizhou city, especially outside the urban areas. These results suggest that the region should increase the rate of coverage, screening and treatment, as well as social awareness of neonatal screening. The patients may obtain diagnosis and early therapy by screening of the newborn infants. It is a very important measure to avoid mental retardation and to improve the quality of the population.
