In the paper, chemical composition analysis, olfactory preference testing, sedative-hypnotic efficacy testing and preparation of microcapsule has been conducted for a kind of essential oil blended by sweet marjoram oil, german chamomile oil, and lavender oil.The main conclusions are as follows:(1) According to GC/MS, terpene-based substance is the main components of the blended essential oil, followed by linalool(10.02%) and linalyl acetate(7.97%).(2) The results of olfactory preference testing in mice shows, the blended oil highly diluted are attractive scents and the scents without diluted are aversive.(3) According to spontaneous locomotor activity, during the process of scent-inhaling, the inactive time of mice was extraordinary increased with diluted scent, especially the concentration of 10-3 and 10-4, by 96% and 120% respectively.(4) According to pentobarbital sodium-induced sleep test, the sleep latency of mice was shortened by 32% and 42%, while the sleep time was extraordinary prolonged by 74% and 70%, with the scent of 10-3 and 10-4 respectively.(5) The blended essential oil was encapsulated byβ-cyclodextrin (β-CD), the optimal parameters were determined by orthogonal experiments, and showed as follows: ratio of core and wall material 1:8(w/w), concentration ofβ-CD 12%(w/w), reaction temperature 50℃, reaction time 1h. Yield of microcapsule was 83.54%, and the encapsulation efficiency was 69.42% under the optimal conditions.
