| Background and objective:Disease spectrum usually refers to the top 10 ranked sequence of diseases that seriously harm to human health and occur frequently. It is important to disease prevention and medical research. There are no reports about spectrum analysis of hospitalized patients with oral and maxillo facial diseases in Shenzhen, a young city whose average age of the population is under 35 years old. The aim of this paper is to assess the clinical significance of spectrum analysis of hospitalized patients with oral and maxillo facial diseases in Shenzhen. A retrospective analysis of hospitalized patients with oral and maxillo facial diseases seen at the Department Maxillo facial Surgery, Shenzhen People's Hospital, between January 1, 1985 and December 31,2009, was conducted. Methods:The study comprised 5693 hospitalized patients with oral and maxillofacial diseases in Shenzhen People's Hospital, between January 1,1985 and December 31, 2009. All patients were identified from the record file during 5 time periods, and the data according to oral and maxillofacial surgery were analyzed.Results:1. The total number of hospitalized patients was 5693, a male- female ratio of 1.6:1.The age range of the majority (49.7%) was 20 to 40 years old.2. Maxillofacial tumor (1800 cases,31.6%), maxillofacial trauma (1498cases,26.3%), salivary gland disease (1437cases,25.2%) constituted a major source of oral and maxillofacial patients. During 5 time periods, the component ratio of maxillofacial tumor was 29.1%,26.9%,32.0%,29.7%,34.4%;the component ratio of maxillofacial trauma was 33.1%,36.3%,30.0%,26.7%,20.5%; the component ratio of salivary gland disease was 23.1%,19.9%,24.3%,25.7%,27.3%.3. Most of the patients with maxillofacial trauma suffered from road traffic accidents, occupational injury, fight injury. In the early years, the component ratio of the above 3 factors was 17.6%, 28.8%,22.4%;and they changed to 59.8%,16.7%,18.6%recently.Conclusion:1. Maxillofacial tumor, maxillofacial trauma, salivary gland disease constituted a major source of oral and maxillofacial patients.2. The component ratio of maxillofacial tumor, salivary gland disease increased with years. The component ratio of maxillofacial trauma decreased with years.3. Most of the patients with maxillofacial trauma suffered from occupational injury in the early years. In recent years, more patients with maxillofacial trauma suffered from road traffic accidents.4. Fractures and soft tissue injury, pleomorphic adenoma, cleft lip and palate, cyst, sublingual gland cysts, vascular tumors, Warthin tumor, salivary gland inflammation, space infection, tongue cancer was the top 10 ranked sequence of oral and maxillofacial diseases.5. Disease spectrum of hospitalized patients with oral and maxillofacial diseases in Shenzhen was unlike other cities'. We need to encourage further research work in this field to provide better record keeping and quality of services to health resource allocation. |
