Research PurposeIt is important for maintain periodontal health on prosthetics. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the health condition of the periodontal tissues, and what's more, the positional changes of the periodontal tissues, particularly the biological width, following gingivectomy with the electrotome in human subjects.Materials and methodsChoose the teeth which need to have gingivectomy with electrotome, The following clinical parameters were obtained at the baseline, after the gingivectomy and three months later at the treated sites (A) and the adjacent tooth or teeth with adjacent sites(B):plaque index(PI), gingival index (GI), the change of the free gingival margin, gingival sulcus, probing depth, bone level.Result1. PI, GI, probing depth, bone level:There was no difference between the baseline and three months later.2. Free gingival margin:At B site postoperative position was smaller than baseline or three months later (P<0.01).3. Gingival sulcus:At A site baseline was higher than postoperative or three months later(P<0.05). And the postoperative was lower than three months later(P<0.01). None difference was found at B site.4. Biological width:it was pointed out that at A site the biological width was smaller at three months compared to baseline, and at B site the biological width remained constant.ConclusionAfter gingivectomy with the electrotome, the periodontal tissues were in good health, and it wouldn't cause alveolar bone absorption1 When the cutting only involved free gingiva, it won't cause attachment loss. It was pointed out that biological width remained constant.2 When the cutting involved a small scope of the attached gingiva, it would cause a slight attachment loss. It was pointed out that biological width was tended to be smaller.
