Facial pigmentation, a form of skin disease caused by dysfunction of melanin cells, can be attributed to an enhanced activity of melanin or uneven accumulations of melanin which subsequently leads to hyperpigmentation. It is a metabolic disorder of skin pigments and can occur in both males and females. Severe facial pigmentations can adversely affect self-esteem of patients and their daily and social activities. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop safe and effective methods to treat this skin disease. This research was conducted with the use of Electric Moxibustion Beauty Device [developed and manufactured in Taiwan] on patients with different skin lesions. The needle of the Electric Moxibustion Beauty Device is placed on the affected area [spots, rashes, acnes, local cauterizations] and the heat that is produced by the electrical current passing through the moxibustion needle clears and removes the skin lesions. Removing the pigmented area using Electric Moxibustion Beauty Device allows new, healthy skin cells to be generated and a complete cure can thus be achieved. Objective:Standard treatments for skin lesions, despite showing clinical effects, sometimes do not result in complete cure and thus disease recurs. Therefore, there is an imperative need to exp-lore alternative methods to improve treatments. This research aims to study the effectivene-ss of Electrical Moxibustion Device in eliminating facial pigmentations.Method:This research was conducted using prospective cohort study. The clinical data were collected from January to December,2009 in Taiwan. There are 72 cases in total [n=24 cases for chloasma, n=18 for freckles, n=30 for dark spots (also known as melanosis)]. Patients were given 1 or 2 treatments depending on the scope and size of facial pigmentati-ons and the effects of treatments were closely followed for 90 days post-treatment. Results from each group were collected pre-and post-Electric Moxibustion treatment.Results:1. Each type of skin pigmentation was observed ninety days after treatment with Electric Moxibustion Beauty Device. The overall cure rate was 73.6% [n=72] among which 15.3% of the patients showed significant improvement,11.1% showed improvement. All of the patients experienced improvement regardless of the types of skin lesions they have and the effectiveness of treatment was 100% although the clinical efficacy of the Electric Moxibustion Beauty Device was not statistically significant [P>0.05].2. Disease distribution proportion study indicates that the disease is more prevalent in females than in males. The result was not statistically significant.3. There was an improvement in clinical efficacy and severity of the disease although the result did not achieve statistical significance.4. The incidence of pigmentations is higher in spring and summer [especially in summer] and is lower in fall and winter. Overall clinical efficacy was observed although it did not achieve statistical significance.5. The comparison of simplified distribution of pigmented skin lesions revealed an improvement in scope and colour of the lesions pre-and post-treatment. The score is higher before treatment than after treatment, suggesting the effectiveness of the treatment in improving the colour and scope of the skin lesions. The result was statistically significant [P<0.05].Conclusion:The results indicate that Electric Moxibustion Beauty Device could effectively treat ski-n complications from facial pigmentation and the cure rate was 100%. The clinical efficacy was profound and the treatment was effective in all patients regardless of genders, the types, seasonal incidence and duration of the diseases. The clinical effects of Electric Moxibustion Device suggest its promising potential for treatment of skin lesions.
