Objective: To explore the expression of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvessel density (MVD) in the primary triple negative breast cancer and non-triple negative breast cancer. To study the relationship of VEGF and microvessel density (MVD). Discuss the effect of VEGF in the tumorigenesis, progression and biological behaviour of breast tumors. Methods: The expression of VEGF and MVD (evaluated by CD34) were detected by immunohistochemical staining in 21 primary triple negative breast cancer and 68 primary non-triple negative breast cancer samples. The correlation between the expression of VEGF, MVD and clinicopathological parameters was analyzed. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between triple negative breast cancer and non-triple negative breast cancer in age, tumor size, lymph node metastasis, TNM classification, histologic type. In primary triple negative breast cancer, the expression of VEGF in lymph node metastasis group was significant higher than that in no lymph node metastasis group(86.67% vs. 33.33%, P<0.05).There was no statistically significant correlation between VEGF expression and age, tumor size, TNM classification in primary triple negative breast cancer. MVD was correlated with lymph node metastasis, tumor size in primary triple negative breast cancer(P<0.05),and was no correlated with age, TNM classification . In primary non-triple negative breast cancer, the expression of VEGF in lymph node metastasis group was significant higher than that in no lymph node metastasis group(40.00% vs. 9.09%,P<0.05). MVD was correlated with lymph node metastasis, tumor size, TNM classification in primary non-triple negative breast cancer(P<0.05).The level of VEGF in triple negative breast cancer was higher than non-triple negative breast cancer. The MVD was no significantly difference between triple negative breast cancer and non-triple negative breast cancer. There was positive correlation between VEGF and MVD( P<0.001 ).Conclusion:The increase of VEGF and MVD were correlated with lymph node metastasis in breast cancer. The increase of MVD was positive correlated with tumor size. VEGF was correlated with angiogenesis and progression of tumor. The expression of VEGF and MVD were deserved to explore further in triple negative breast cancer.
