Objective: To evaluate the clinical effect of initial periodontal therapy on gingival overgrowth induced by calcium channel blocker(CCB) without changing other drugs or withdrawing the CCB .Methods: Collect the cases of gingival overgrowth induced by CCB and 6 subjects finished the research. Initial periodontal therapy including oral health instruction, supragingival scaling, subgingival scaling and root planning etc was done without changing other drugs or withdrawing the CCB.The sulcus bleeding index, plaque index, probing depth and gingival hyperplastic index were scored on labial sites of the anterior teeth. After initial periodontal therapy, above indices were examined again at 1 month,3 month .Initial periodontal therapy were done again and oral hygeian conditions were emphasized.Results:1,The sulcus bleeding index, probing depth and gingival hyperplastic index improved gradually and statiscally significant difference was found between baseline and one month later, between baseline and three month later, between one month later and three month later (P<0.0001) .2,The plaque index is statiscally significant different between baseline and one month later, between baseline and three month later (P<0.0001) . Plaque index between one month later and three month later did not have statiscally significant difference (P =0.414) . 3,The sulcus bleeding index was positively correlated to the plaque index moderately(r=0.546) .4,The gingival inflammation improved and the extent of gingival overgrowth reduced unceasing. Conclusion: Initial periodontal therapy is effective to drug-induced gingival overgrowth. And this provides a rational project for the ones who can not change or withdraw the CCB.
