The Relation Of Electroencephalography And Neuropsychology Of Dementia And TCM Syndromes

Objective:This paper is to observe the abnormality rate of electroencePhalography(EEG)and the neuropsychological assessments of dementia patients,study the correlation with deficiency and excess syndromes of traditional chinese medicine(TCM).Furthermore,it is expected to provide an objective index for diagnosis of the differentiation typing of TCM,and provide a new method for prevention,early diagnosis,therapeutic evaluation and judgement the prognosis.Methods:Patients were selected according asthenia and sthenia syndrome of TCM,including 24 asthenia syndrome and 27 sthenia syndrome of dementia,30 healthy elderly.Every patient were examined by Neuropsychological scale to investigate his cognitive function,and also examined by the fully digital electroencephalograph.Then to study correlation between indexes and TCM syndrome differentiation.All data were analysised by SPSS 13.0Results:1.Compared with normal control group,the dementia patients had a significantly abnormal rate of EEG.And they all had statistical significance(P＜0.01).2.Compared with the sthenia syndrome of dementia,the asthenia syndrome had a significantly abnormal rate of EEG.And they all had statistical significance(P＜0.05)3.The abnormal rate of EEG has a obviously negative correlation with the scores of MMSE(r=-0.707,P＜0.01),the abnormal of EEG is aggravated gradually while the scores of MMSE decreasing.4.The relationship between neuropsychological assessment and TCM syndrome differentiation are:Cognitive dysfunction scores of Kidney deficiency and heart and spleen syndrome decreased more dramatical than other syndromes.Ability of daily living scores of Phlegm obstruction and blood stasis was higher than other syndromes.Conclusions:1.EEG is significantly abnormal in dementia patients;EEG has some clinical significance in assistance diagnosis of dementia.2.Between the asthenia and sthenia syndrome dementia patients,they had a significantly abnormal rate of EEG.So it indicates that the results of EEG may be used as a reference index to the asthenia and sthenia syndromes of TCM.3.There are significant correlation between the abnormal rate of EEG and the scores of MMSE.EEG might be used in aided evaluation to impaired cognitive function of dementia.4.The relationship between neuropsychological assessment and TCM syndrome differentiation are:Cognitive dysfunction scores of Kidney deficiency and heart and spleen syndrome decreased more dramatical than other syndromes.Ability of daily living scores of Phlegm obstruction and blood stasis was higher than other syndromes.It suggests that the scores of neuropsychological tests may be used as a reference index to the TCM syndromes.
