Short Term Result Of Patellofemoral Arthroplasty

Background. The treatment of isolated patellofemoral arthritis was controversial. It has been reported that the results of early prothesis such as Lubinus Prothesis was not satisfied. However, with the development of new technology and new prothesis, the therapeutic effect of patellofemoral arthroplasty is becoming better and better. Nowadays, as a intermediate procedure of selective patients with patellofemoral arthritis, patellofemoral arthroplasty has been considered an alternative choice to total knee arthroplasty. The reports of the new prothesis are still limited.Objective. Studying the patient selection, indication, contraindication, and results of the patellofemoral arthroplasty with Avon prothesis.Method. We make a retrospective follow-up visit of the two patellofemoral arthroplasty cases performed between January,2006 and January, 2009 in our hospital. Comparing the symptom, radiographs, American Knee Score System (AKSS)(0—100), The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) (0—100) before and after the operations and Combining with other reports from other orthopaedic institutes, we collect and analysis the results and make the initial conclusion.Result. There are two patellofemoral arthroplasty cases in our hospital. One is followed up by 21 months, the other is followed up by 32 months. All the regular out-patient clinic follow do not show any obvious postoperative complications. In case one, the preoperative AKSS is 57 point, Functional Score is 25 point and WOMAC score is 52.3 point, while the postoperative AKSS is 83 point, Functional Score is 90 point and WOMAC score is 89.4 point. In case two, the preoperative AKSS is 59 point, Functional score is 40 point and WOMAC score is 51.5 point, while the postoperative AKSS is 82 point, Functional score is 90 point and WOMAC score is 90.2 point. Thelast telephonic follow shows the patients are satisfied with the function of their operatedknees.Conclusion. The patellofemoral arthroplasty can have a good short term result.
