| Objective To evaluate the effects of endoscopic sinus surgery to treat fungus ball of the maxillary sinus.Method Forty-four cases of patients with fungus ball of the maxillary sinus received transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery by single pathway.A telephone survey about symptoms was conducted.Medium follow up was 33 months.Several symptom scores were measured subjectively.They were comprised of nasal obstruction,purulent nasal discharge,nasal discharge with hemorrhage,facial pain.The differences symptom scores of pre- and post operation were analyzed by rank sum test.The patients with symptoms post operation were asked to nasal endoscopy for diagnosis of recurrence.Result The significant improved scores were found in postoperative patients(p<0.01).and among the 44 cases only one recurrent case were confirmed.Therefore,the recurrent rate is 2.3%. Conclusion Fungus ball of maxillary sinus can be successfully treated with transnasal endoscopic sinus surgery by single pathway,and the follow up result was satisfied.The symptom related questionnaire is useful. |
