Objective:Irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disease. The symptoms of IBS are similar to those of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The purpose of this study was to test whether small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is associated with IBS.The small intestinal bacterial overgrowth was determined by glucose hydrogen breath test(GHBT) method,to estimate the incidence of SIBO in IBS patients,to study the incidence of the difference between IBS and the control, and,to observe the incidence of the difference among with the IBS-Diarrhea(IBS-D),IBS-Constipation(IBS-C) and IBS-Alternating(IBS-A).Method:Consecutive patients with irritable bowel syndrome according to RomeⅢcriteria were enrolled(N=92).The control population consiste of sex-and age-matched healthy subjects without irritable bowel syndrome symptoms(n=55).case of patients with IBS were divided according to the symptom subtypes(Diarrhea,Constipation and Alternating),All subjects underwent glucose-hydrogen breath test to detect the basal value, cases of non-hydrogen producting, and positive rate of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. The data are then subjected to statistical analysis. Results:The average of the basal values of IBS and control group were 13.14ppm and 5.22ppm,There was statistically significant differentence(P<0.05); The average of the basal values of IBS-D,IBS-C and IBS-A group were 15.00ppm,11.81ppm and 12.60ppm,There were no statistically significant differentence(P>0.05) among with the IBS-D,IBS-C and IBS-A;The positivity of glucose breath test was found 60.9%in IBS and 14.5%in the control group, the control group difference between IBS group resulting statistically significant(P<0.05);The positivity of glucose breath test was found 67.7%in IBS-D patients,61.3%in IBS-C patients and 53.3%in IBS-A patients, but,There was no difference among with the IBS-D,IBS-C and IBS-A groups significant(P>0.05).Conclusions:The SIBO positive rate and fasting breath hydrogen concentration in patients with IBS was significantly higher than those of the control groups.but, there was no difference between with the IBS-D,IBS-C and IBS-A groups significant. The present case-control study show an epidemiological association between irritable bowel syndrome and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. However, irritable bowel syndrome sub-types with positivity of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth was no significant correlation.
