Objective:To demonstrate the possibility and mechanism of radiotherapy by investigating the effects of different doses of 6MV X-ray radiotherapy on Echinococcus granulosus in rat. Methods:After being irradiated by 10,20,30 and 40Gy of 6 MV X—ray, these examinations were carried out such as the ultrastructure of the Echinococcus granulosus cysts in rat with electron-microscope,the total protein amount in hydatid cyst fluid(HCF) and Ca2+ ion in HCF.The potassium-pyroantimonate(PPA) cytochemical method was used to demonstrate whether blocked calcium channels would be one reason of radiotherapy on Echinococcus granulosus cysts in rat. Results:The cyst wall tissue and cells appeared abnormal changes and damages microscopically in the treated groups to a different extent. The total protein amount in hydatid cyst fluid(HCF) increased, while Ca2+ in HCF reduced obviously in the treated groups, especially in high dose groups. With PPA,some electron-dense precipitates were presented on the mitochondria and endocytoplasmic reticulum in the treated groups. Conclusion:The structure of the cysts of Echinococcus granulosus in rat can be damaged by radiotherapy which showed a quantity-efficiency relation to some extent.
