Gliomas are the most common tumours of central nervous system(CNS)and high grade of these are extremely invasive. Current treatment including surgery,radio- and chemotherapy remains insufficient as these tumours display a diffuse infiltrative growth pattern and tend to recur despite extensive debulking surgery followed by radio- and chemotherapy.Outcomes of these patients with glioma are very disappointing and glioma awfully threaten the well-beings of peoples. In the past ,we thought tumor cells derive from the mutation of genes in normal cells and all cells of tumors have the capability of ever-proliferation. However, researches in recent years have showd that gliomas are heterogeneous and none cells of gliomas but the brain glioma stem cells(BGSCs)have the ability of ever-proliferation and self-renewal. Singh and his colleagues have for the first time gained BGSCs from gliomas successfully and have also proved the tumorigenesis of these cells.Bao and his colleagues have proved that BGSCs have a close relation with the resistance of gliomas to radiotherapy.Research from Zhang and his colleagues showed that patients with CD133(+)/nestin(+)have a shorter survival time than those with CD133(-)/nestin(-).Eyler and his colleagues found that Akt inhibitor can especially target BGSCs and can induce the apoptosis of BGSCs and will prolong the survival time of tumor-bearing mice.Researches to the BGSCs certainly will bring far-reaching influences to the genesis, recurrance, mechanism of invasiveness of gliomas and especially the effective therapies to gliomas. This review will foucus on the advancement of BGSCs in recent years.
