Background:The number of people who are overweight or obese has increased dramatically over the years as our society began to flourish. Obesity not only affects our appearance, but also brings many health hazards with it,including heart attacks, strokes and diabetes with all of its complications.Obesity is a serious concern to all health care practitioners. A vast amount of research has been done on obesity in general;however, the different types of obesity lack investigation.Depending on where fat is stored on the body, abdominal obesity,a subtype of obesity,is fat mostly distributed over the abdomen and back. The reason the distribution of fat is significant is because depending on where it' s concentrated the danger level for adult diseases changes. For abdominal obesity, there' s a higher danger of ischemic heart disease, diabetes and hyperlipidemia.Purpose:To compare the curative effect of electro-acupuncture therapy in the treatment simple obesity and obesity obesity.Method:A total of 27 simple obese and 42 abdominal obese patients were treated with electro-acupuncture therapy. The chosen acupoints for both groups were daimai, zhongwan, tianshu, shuifen, and fenglong.According to the different Chinese medicine syndrome, the following were acupoints were added to the prescription. For the spleen deficient with dampness, pishu and yinlingquan were used;for the stomach heat with dampness, quchi and zusanli were used;for the liver qi stagnation, ganshu and zusanli were used;for the deficient spleen and kidney, guanyuan, pishu and shenshu were used;for the yin deficient with heat, sanyinjiao and shenshu were used;lastly, for constipation, fujie, shangjuxu, and zusanli were used. After carrying out proper sterile procedures, acupuncture needles were inserted into the assigned acupoints. After accomplishing the acupuncture sensation,electro-acupuncture was applied for 30 minutes.During the entire course of treatment,no other weight-losing remedies were allowed, and the patients were suggested to consume a low carbohydrate, fat and high fiber diet. Females during menses may skip treatment. All patients had their height, weight, waistline, hipline measured before and after treatment.Five treatments equal one course, and a total of 2 courses were done. All data were statistically analyzed using the SPSS11.5 software. Results:After treatment, the patients' BMI(Body Mass Index) decreased, with the abdominal obese group having more significant results than the simple obese group(p<0.01,p<0.05,respectively).The weight in both groups decreased significantly after treatment(p<0.05).The waistline before and after treatment, the change in the abdominal obese group was more significant than the simple obese group(p<0.01).As for the hipline before and after treatment, the change in both groups was not significantly different(p>0.05). The change in WHR(Waist-Hip Ratio) after treatment significantly lowered in both groups(p<0.05).The total effective rate of the abdominal obese group was significantly higher than that of the simple obese group(p<0.05).Conclusions:1.Electro-acupuncture therapy can reduce the patients' BMI.The effect in abdominally obese patients was seen to be more significant.2.Electro-acupuncture therapy was more effective in decreasing the waistline for abdominally obese patients.3.Elector-acupuncture therapy had similar effect in decreasing the hipline in both groups.4.Electro-acupuncture therapy was more effective in lowering the WHR in the abdominal obese group than the simple obese group.5.The abdominal obesegroup resulted in a higher total effective rate than the simple obese group.
