Objective To evaluate the state of nasal airflow in patients with nasal septal deviation. To evaluate the effect of nasal septal surgery with nasal objective examination. To compare the results of objective examination with subjective feeling. To investigate the value of objective nasal airflow evaluation in the surgery for nasal septal deviation. Methods 1.One hundred and ten patients with nasal septal deviation were randomly recruited.Nasal spirometry was used to get the volume of airflow in each side nasal cavity(VL,VR) and nasal partitioning of airflow ratio(NPR).The data was analyzed to get the common characteristics;2.AR,RM and NS were used in fifty-one patients who prepared for surgery of nasal septal deviation. Each patient was tested before and twelve weeks after surgery;3.Record the data of nasal airway resistance(NAR),nasal caity volume of 0-5cm(NCV0-5),nasal minimal cross-sectional area(NMCA) and nasal partitioning of airflow ratio (NPR);4.Visual analogue scale(VAS) was used to estimate the degree of subjective feeling of nasal obstruction. The results were analyzed to investigate the correlation between the results of objective examination and the results of VAS.Results 1.NS emamination shows that the results are VL:1.656±0.769L,VR: 1.536±0.716L.Analyzed with Spss16.0,most of the data is between 0.5 to 2.5L. There is no significant difference between VL and VR(p>0.05).NPR: 0.280±0.254,seventy-three patients NPR are between 0 to 0.3 and only twelve patients NPR are more than 0.6;2.AR test results:The preoperative data is NCV0-5:4.07±0.91cm3 NMCA:0.33±0.08cm2,and the postoperative data is NCV0-5:7.29±0.68 cm3 NMCA:0.56±0.08 cm2.Significant difference is shown between the data preoperative and postoperative(p<0.01).The NCV and NMCA data is increased by surgery;3.RM test results:The preoperative data is NAR: 1.140±0.336 kPa·s·L-1 and the postoperative data is NAR:0.345±0.117 kPa·s·L-1, suggesting significant difference(p<0.01).NAR decreased to the normal level postoperatively;4.NS test results:The preoperative data is NPR:0.53±0.22 and the postoperative data is NPR:0.18±0.12.Significant difference is shown between the data preoperative and postoperative(p<0.01).This means that the difference in airflow between left and right nasal cavity airflow decreased by the surgery;5. VAS test results:The preoperative data is VAS:7.36±1.23 and the postoperative data is VAS:1.14±0.91.Significant difference is shown between the data preoperative and postoperative(p<0.01).The average of VAS decreased more than 6.Conclusions Objective examination of nasal airflow can help us to evaluate the state of nasal septal deviation in patients before surgery. It also can evaluate the effect of surgery treatment. Therefore, the objective examination of nasal airflow could be used as effective method for doctors in surgery selection and effect evaluation.
