Objective To explore the expressions and their clinical significance of spleen tyrosine kinase(Syk) protein in human cervical carcinoma. Methods PV-6000 immunohistochemistry was applied to detect the expressions of Syk protein in 46 cervical carcinoma, 15 chronic infammtion and normal cervical tissues. To analyzed of the levels of Syk protein in a conjunction with the clinical features of cervical carcinoma. Results The positive staining of Syk protein mainly localized in the cytoplasm, distributed diffusely and highly intensity expression in the normal cervical tissue and chronic cervicitis tissue, but the expression of Syk protein was weaker in cervical cancer. The expression of Syk protein in cervical cancer, chronic cervicitis and normal cervical tissue differently (x~2=13.184, P<0.05) . The protein expression of Syk was significantly lower in cervical cancer than that in normal cervical tissue (x~2=11.396, P<0.01) and chronic cervicitis tissue (x~2=4.034, P<0.05) , but the difference had no meaning between normal cervical and chronic cervicitis tissue (P>0.05) .There was no significant relationship between the levels of Syk protein expression with the patients' ages(x~2=0.869, P>0.05), pathological types(x~2=0.269, P>0.05) and the clinical stage(x~2=0.253, P>0.05) in invasive carcinoma of cervix, But the levels of Syk-protein expression was significant associated with the the differentiation of tumor histology(x~2=4.749, P<0.05), lymph node metastasis(x~2=5.828, P<0.05)and the invasion of deep muscular layer (x~2=3.982, P<0.05) .Conclusions The expression of Syk protein in cervical cancer, chronic cervicitis and normal cervical tissue was different. There was no difference between normal cervical and chronic cervicitis tissue on Syk-protein expression. The lower expression of Syk may play an important role in genesis /invasive and metastasis of cervical carcinoma. Chronic cervicitis may not be risk factors for the genesis of cervical cancer. Detection of Syk protein may be used as reference markers for judging prognosis of patients with cervical carcinoma.
