Objective:To explore the characteristics of glucose and lipid metabolism in Phlegm-damp Syndrome of cases with impaired glucose regulation(IGR).Materials and methods:According to diagnostic criteria of IGR published by WHO in 1999 and differentiation standard of Phlegm-damp Syndrome made by the Consumptive Thirst Committee of China TCM Society in 1992,We selected 60 cases of IGR patients,30 cases of phlegm-damp-positive and 30cases of negative types,27 males and 33 females, age from31~70 years old.The average age was 49.68±8.67 years old.The average body mass index(BMI) was 25.70±3.05kg/m~2.Another 20 examples was selected as normal group in addition, including 8 males and 12 females, age 28~73 years old.And the average age was 47.90±11.53 years old.All of them should tell their clinical symptoms by themselves first, and then be inquired by doctors. At the same time, they were examined the targets as below:the blood glucose measurement used glucose oxidase method;the serum lipid determination used enzymatic method;the determination of plasma insulin used highly sensitive Radioimmunoassay(RIA);the determination of free fatty acids(FFAs) used immunity transmission turbidity. The BMI was calculated used the ratio between weight and square of the height.Insulin resistance was calculated using the homeostasis assessment(HOMA)(HOMA-IR=FPG×FINS/22.5).Results:1.Compared with the health control cases, the FFAs,BMI,FPG,OGTT2hPG,FINS and HOMA-IR of patients with IGR were significantly higher(P<0.01).2.Compared with the non-phlegm-damp cases with IGR,the FFAs,BMI,FINS and HOMA-IR of phlegm-damp subjects with IGR were significantly higher(P<0.01),and the level of TG was higher also(P<0.05).3.The HOMA-IR was positively correlated to BMI,FFAs and TG(P<0.01 or P<0.05). And there was an intimate relationship between FFAs and HOMA-IR(The interrelated coefficient was more than 0.5.).Conclusion:1.Compared with the non-phlegm-damp cases with IGR,the HOMA-IR of phlegm-damp subjects with IGR is higher. It implies that Phlegm-damp Syndrome with IGR is closely related to insulin resistance. 2.Compared with the non-phlegm-damp cases with IGR,the BMI,TG and FFAs of phlegm-damp subjects with IGR is higher. It implies that the high level of BMI,TG and FFAs can be used as reference index for Phlegm-damp Syndrome with IGR.3.The HOMA-IR is positively correlated to FFAs and TG.It implies that the disorder of lipids metabolism plays an important role in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance in Phlegm-damp Syndrome with IGR.
