Along with the introduction of Buddhism to China, there appeared the first Buddhist doctor- An Shigao. From then on the number of the Buddhist doctor- came to China increased gradually, and as a result there appeared a large number of Buddhist monks with good medical skills in China. When the Buddhist doctors-brought honor to the Buddhism they also relieved people's indispositions with their excellent medical skills, and did the philanthropies broadly, managed the sickness work place, and arranged for the poverty-stricken patients according to the Buddhist doctrine.The Buddhist monks cured the emperor as well as nobles' diseases when they did medicine practices, so they were highly regarded by the emperor and obtained awards from him; and they derived respects form literati on their contacts with them, and then they created deep friendships with the literati, the relations of whom are close and tight. The Buddhist doctors' excellent medical skills also obtained the common custom doctors' approval and admiration, and they help supply each other's needs, which promoted the traditional Chinese medicine unceasing development. The Buddhist doctors also accepted persons to impart skills when they treated the illnesses to save the patients. The Han Nationality Buddhist doctors primarily handed down the medical skills by inheritance of the master and apprentice, which was completely different from the mode of regular medical schools in the Tibetan Buddhism. Generally there were a large number of students in medical schools in the Tibetan Buddhism, and medicine became a part the temple's education, which broke the traditional mode of taught and learnt by the master and apprentice and expanded the medical education scope. |
