Liriope spicata (Thunb.) Lour.is the dry earthnut of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. However, Liriope spicata Lour. was named as Liriope spicata before 1990. Until at 1995,it has the name we called today and also is the origin medicine material in Fujian Province, which grows in Quanzhou and Putian (at the southern part of Fujian Province). Liriope muscari (Decne.)Baily.is collected and recorded in the "Index of Liriope spicata Lour." of "Pharmacopoeia of the People's republic of China (1995 Edition)" It mainly cures of yin deficiency with internal heat, fluid consumption with thirst, dry cough with thick phlegm and qi counterflow. Or it cures of heat with damaging fluid and constipation. It is a kind of Chinese medicine with nourishing yin and engendering fluid, moistening lung and clearing heart heat, clearing dryness and calming. Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily.and Liriope spicata are common in nature and flavour, meridian entry, function and main cure. In Traditional Chinese Medicine prescription, it is prescribed as medicine as Liriope spicata and it has become the mainstream product of Liriope spicata as TCD(Traditional Chinese Drug). This paper researches the quality of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. in these 4 aspects. The main results were as follows:1. Practical investigation and data collection & research show that the history of Liriope spicata in Xianyou County (Putian, Fujian) could be tracked back to 2nd year the reign of Emperor Baoyou, Song Dynasty and there is also more than 60 years of planting Liriope spicata in modern time. It has large yields which account for 50% of normal supply in China, all of which presents that Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. is the origin medicine material in Fujian and has become the mainstream product of recent Liriope spicata series as TCD.2. The optimum technological condition of extracting polysaccharide in Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. are temperature with 90℃, percentage of solid and fluid with 1:30,time with 3.5 h. Temperature of extracting plays a leading role in extracting rate. But percentage of solid and fluid and time of extracting have a little influence on it.3. From Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. powder slices, many dispersed or fasciculus needle crystals, sheet scleroid and fasciculus or dispersed wood fiber can be observed. From paraffin slices of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily, scleroid at the later endodermis are only 1 row, which is different from Liriope spicata(Thunb.)Lour.var.prolifera Y.T.Ma(1~2 rows of scleroid). Number of vascular bundles in transverse section of earthnut is large and it reaches to 16~22 which is in accordance with the description of pharmacopoeia of People Republic of China.4. By identifying saponins and senegenin by TLC it found that spots with same color were showed in senegenin TCL and in the corresponding positions of standard samples. At the same time, chromatogram maps of components in Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. collected from 10 different places are the same basically when dotting them at the same silica gel plate by capillary. Moreover, when comparing referent medicine material of Liriope spicata, Liriope spicata(Thunb.)Lour.var.proliferaY.T.Ma and Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily., differences in chromatogram maps are significant. After detecting polysaccharide in Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily by Phenol-sulfate Colorimetry, it found that there is absorption maximum at 489.9nm and average recovery is 105.4% (n=5,RSD=2.04%) ,contents of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily reaches to more than 31%.So it is a method with convenience, quickness and fine reproducibility, which can be used as an idea method of detecting contents of polysaccharide.5. By dynamic detecting alcohol extraction, water extraction, polysaccharide and useful inorganic elements in the growth course of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily, according to their characteristics of changes, considering yields and climatic reasons in producing areas, comprehensively deciding that late March is the optimum harvesting stage of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. Moreover, by detecting and analyzing useful inorganic elements it found that Fe and Mg are at the highest contents and their capabilities of enriching Zn are strongest among useful inorganic elements.6. Being based on research, combing with documents, this paper drafts standards for quality control of Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. By detecting contents of monosaccharide after polysaccharide acid hydrolysis and then transforming to contents of total polysaccharide, which can be used as one of quality standard for Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily. Contents of total polysaccharide must be not less than 30% in Liriope muscari (Decne.) Baily..
