Background and Purpose: In recent years,along with marked rise in the incidence of lung cancer ,the incidence of brain metastasis from lung cancer has increased year by year.The main treatment strategy of lung cancer with brain metastasis is irradiation . At the same time plus radiation sensitizer can be further enhanced radiation efficiency and extend the survival time of patients.The aim of this study is to observe the short-term curative and toxicity ofβ-elemene for increasing in radiosensitivity on brain metastasis from lung cancer and provide an effective treatment for brain metastases.Methods:Seventy-five patients with brain metastasis were divided into two groups:radiation+β-elemene(39 patients),radiation(36 patients).All of these patients were treated through parallel fields radiotherapy with 6MV-Xray.1.8-2.0Gy perfraction.The dose was 40Gy/4-5W for the whole brain and 10-20Gy/1-2W was added to parts of solitary focus.The treatment group received concurrent chemotherapy (β-elemene400mg/time,one/day, three weeks).Results:The complete response rate (CR) of the two groups in symptomatology were:69.7%,37.5%,the overall response rate (CR+PR) were:89.7%,56.3%.The difference of two date between two groups were statistically significant (P<0.05);in the change of tumor volume,the two groups CR:22.9%,7.7%;(CR+PR):74.3%,38.5%,The difference of overall response rate between two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05).The incidence of toxicity was not different between the treatment group and control group. Conclusion:β-elemene is radiosentizative to brain metastasis from lung cancer.It could increase immediate response of brain metastasis without severe toxictes.
