Chinese materia medica is an important component of the traditional Chinese medical science.Reinforceing the foundational studies of Traditional Chinese medicine, innovating and modernizing it have been one of special projects of the national significant science and technology, and have been subsidized by the the national natural science fund. The application of modern technology in physical and chemical identification of traditional Chinese medicine spectrographic method was summarized first.Secondly the rationale of Infrared and Raman spectra, herb and prescription of Traditional Chinese medicine was expounded. Then Decoction Mahuang was studied adopting infrared spectrometry. The Infrared spectrum of the composition of Decoction Mahuang, the single herb Herba Ephedra,Semen Armeniacae Amarum,Ramulus Cinnarnomi,Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata, and the admixture medicinal decoction Herba Ephedra+Semen Armeniacae Amarum,Herba Ephedra+Ramulus Cinnarnomi,Herba Ephedra+Semen Armeniacae Amarum+Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata(decoction of san-ao),were tested and analyzed to discuss the spectra change and study the interaction after cooking. The new notion of recipe spectroscopy was proposed.Utilizing self-assembly near-Infrared Raman spectroscopy rapid detection device and LabRAM HR 800 Confocal Micro Raman spectrometer, the Raman spectra and the first derivative spectra of single herbs Rhizoma Dioscoreae,Radix Paeoniae Rubra,Radix Sanguisorbae were tested and analyzed. The major ingredients matched with the known basic biochemical composition.Studies indicated,Raman spectroscopy technology could be a more accurate and powerful method than other identification methods in quality monitoring of Chinese materia medica.
