| Objective Our objective is to report the investigation of the morbidity of ocular fundus diseases in Tibetan aged 40 and over in ZeKu County, Qinghai Province, to report the rate of blindness and low vision, and also to compare the results with those domestic epidemiological data are existing. At the same time we deduce the probable reasons those lead to high altitude natives' blindness and low vision .Method we selected 2229 Tibetans aged 40 and over in Zeku county, Qinghai Province in randomly by cluster sampling method during August to December in 2006. The binocular indirect ophthalmoscope was used in our survey. And the result were compared with the domestic epidemiological data those are existing.Result In our survey 2229 Tibetans aged 40 and over in Zeku county, Qinghai Province were selected . Among them 1209 were men and 1090 were women, Their ages were range from 40 years old to 88 years old, Those people were mainly without education. At last two hundred and six cases were found to have abnormal ocular fundus, and the eye disease rate was 9.20% ( 206/2229 eyes). Among these abnormal ocular fundus age-related macular degeneration and optic atrophy are the main diseases . The age - related macular degeneration are 112 eyes and optic atrophy are 32 eyes, They are in the first and second place among all the diseases respectively. The rate of blindness increases with age , while it has nothing to do with sexual distinction. The morbidity of ocular fundus diseases is higher in high plateau than in normal plateau; age-related macular degeneration and optic atrophy are the main diseases.Conclusion The rate of abnormal ocular fundus is higher in high plateau than in normal plateau, age - related macular degeneration and optic atrophy are the main diseases. High attitude, lack of oxygen and vitamin , light burn chronicly may be the main reasons. |
