Objective To explore the possible roles of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide(PACAP)a neuropeptide in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps by studying its expression and distribution of neuropeptides in the polyp of chronic sinusitis patients with nasal polyps. Method The mucosa specimens of thirty chronic sinusitis patients with nasal polyps patients were selected randomly as the experiment group, then were allocated into two subgroups A and B depending on its complication with allergic rhinitis (A) or not(B). While the normal inferior turbinal mucosa samples from the gross specimens of ten nasal septoplastic surgery patients were selected as the control group. The expression and distribution of PACAP were examined by immunohistochemical method and computer image disposing and analyzing system. Result The terminals of PACAP in the experiment group were markedly decreased in optical density(OD) of immunostaining compared to the control group ,and the difference between the two groups is significant (<0.05) .But the difference is not significant(> 0.05) between The experiment group A and experiment group B. Conclusion PACAP may play important roles in the evelopment of nasal polyp as well as its post-surgical recurrence possibly through decreased production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.
