Objectives: To study the clinical effect of uterine artery embolization for treatment of symptomatic uterine fibroids and the influence on ovarian fuction. Methods: 26 cases with symptomatic uterine fibroids were treated by Seldinger technique, transcatheter superselective two sides uterine artery, use PVA or KMG partical, embolize fibroid uterine, then use gelfoam partical appropriately embolize proximity of uterine artery. All of cases, serum levels of concentrations of estrin( E2) , progestogen (P) , follicule stimulating hormone(FSH) , luteotropic hormone(LH) and prolactin(PRL) were measured before UAE and 3,6 months after UAE.Changes of clinical symptoms and fibroid volum were followed up after UAE.We analysed the data with statistics software of SPSS11.5.Results: Bilateral embolization of the uterine arteries was performed in 26 caeses , the successful rate of superselection almost resched 100﹪. All of cases clinical symptoms were relieved significantly after UAE, and the menses improvement is most remarkable, 23 cases of patient with abnormal menstruation after UAE three months 21 cases (91.3%) menstruation recovered completely normally, furthermore, 2 cases menstrual blood volume reduce significantly , and after three months, six months menstrual period compared with preoperative there was satistically significant difference(P﹤0.05). 17 cases of patient with hypohemia after UAE six months the hemochrome were restored to 12 g∕L. With frequent micturition, urgency and other oppression symptoms in the eight cases, 5 cases (62.5%) symptoms disappeared, 3 cases symptoms were alleviated. The follow-up period of 3 months and 6 months with observe the size of uterine and fibroid, the average reduction in uterine and fibroid volum were 35.4﹪and 49.3﹪at 3 months, the average reduction in uterine and fibroid volum were 48.2﹪and 58﹪at 6 months. All of patients after the fibroid diminution, has not increased again during the period of observation. The serum hormone levels of estrin(E2), progestogen(P), follicule stimulating hormone(FSH) , luteotropic hormone(LH) and prolactin(PRL) were measured before UAE and 3,6 months after UAE, and no apparent changes in hormone levels. In 26 cases of patient, average age 36 years old(include two cases over 45 years of age).No one case amenorrhea and other menopausal symptom occurred during the period of observation after UAE.Conclusions: As a minimal invasive technique, uterine artery embolization is a good method for uterine fibroid with better effects, operate easily and low complication rate. Uterine artery embolization for uterine fibroid has on noticeable effect on ovarian function. The patient s could recover normal menses.
