Objective: The aim of the study was to judge and compare the therapeutic effects of three clinical approaches for the patients suffering from retinal vein occlusion by observing the changes in the thickness of retinal neuroepidermal layer and changes in the macular edema using optical coherence tomography (OCT).Methods: Seventy-five patients suffering from retinal vein occlusion were divided into three groups according to the clinical treatments, laser coagulation, intravitreal triamcinilone acetonide or the combination of the two methods. The examinations of OCT and visual acuity were carried out before start of the clinical treatment and 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after the treatment. The group of patients treated with the combination of the methods was further divided into two sub-groups according to the time of the intervals between the treatments, in order to find out the optimal juncture.Results:1.the group of the laser coagulation: The thickness of the retina of the patients before the treatment was 602.20μm±302.40μm, while 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after the treatment, the retinal thickness were 585.67μm±252.19μm, 561.90μm±229.68μm, 518.72μm±301.12μm, 368.11μm±112.27μm and 339.50μm±258.89μm respectively. The difference in the retinal thickness before and after the treatment was statistically significance(P <0.05). The visual acuity after treatment improved in 14 eyes at last time during follow-up periods.2.the group of intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide: The retinal thickness at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after treatment were 300.00μm±207.72μm, 376.18μm±256.84μm, 408.22μm±274.10μm, 401.33μm±299.81μm and 399.00μm±310.59μm respectively. While the retinal thickness before the treatment was 625.95μm±231.98μm. The difference was statistically significance (P <0.05). The visual acuity after treatment improved in 14 eyes at last time during follow-up periods.3.the group of therapeutic alliance with two methods before: The retinal thickness at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after treatment were 513.59μm±223.93μm, 325.08μm±214.62μm,385.00μm±200.50μm, 247.15μm±153.06μm and 235.60μm±159.49μm respectively. While the retinal thickness before the treatment was 624.09μ±207.64μm. The difference was statistically significance (P <0.05). The visual acuity after treatment improved in 16 eyes at last time during follow-up periods. Different time intervals of the two treatments made difference in the therapeutic effects. The difference was statistically significance (P <0.05).4.The comparison of the three methods results at last time during follow-up periods: We compared the retinal thickness of the three groups at last time follow-up periods. The difference was statistically significance (P <0.05). It was different that the three groups from the long term curative effect. The combination of the two methods was obviously effective. Conclusion: The three methods were effective for the patients suffering from retinal vein occlusion. The combination of the two methods compared with two other methods was more effective. The combination of the two methods, i.e., intravitreal injection with triamcinolone acetonide within 1 month after the treatment of laser coagulation, were obviously effective.
