Mechanical Properties Of Bisphosphonate-loaded PMMA Bone Cement And Influence Of PBS On Them

Objective To investigate the mechanical properties of Polymethylmethacry late(PMMA)bone cement loaded with different concentration of bisphosphonatealendronate, as well as the influence of the PBS on them.Methods Different kinds of specimens were respectively performed and grouped into 8 groups,which were controlled(ⅰ)0.1%,(ⅱ)0.5%,(ⅲ)1%according to the different concentration of alendronate in bone cement,and to whether or not in PBS.Then the compressive strength,elastic modulus,tensile strength and bending strength were investigated respectively.All the data was collected and analyzed statistically(ANOVA and q-test).Results All the properties investigated here of cement degraded after loaded with Alendronate,(ⅰ)the compressive strength of all the specimens＞70 Mpa,there is no staticstically significant,all fit clinical standardization.(ⅱ)the elastic moudlus among all the specimens has no staticstically significant.(ⅲ)the bending strength degraded after increase the load of alendronate,but ther is no staticstically significant compare pure control group.They still correspond ISO5833 standardization(＞50Mpa).(ⅳ)the tensile strength of every experiment group degraded significantly compare control group(P＜0.05).They still correspond ISO5833 standardization(＞20Mpa).In moist environment:(ⅰ)the compressive strength and elastic modulus in moist environment all increase compare as in dry environment(P＜0.05).the tensile strength in moist increase compare as in dry enviroment,but there is no statistically significant(P＞0.05).All the properties is positive correlation according to the drug load.(ⅱ)the bending strength of all specimens degraded slightly,but they all still exceed 50Mpa.Conclusion The mechanical properties investigate here are suitable for clinical use at the Concentration of 1.0%in weight or lower.PBS can do good to the mechanical properties of cement except bending strength..
