Effect Of Levonorgestrel-releasing Intrauterine System In The Treatment Of Endometriosis

Objective To assess the clinical efficacy and side effects of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system(LNG-IUS) in the treatment of endometriosis and adenomyosis. Methods fifty-nine cases of EMs or AM patients received insertion of LNG-IUS. The indexes such as the score of dysmenorrhea ,uterine volume, the thickness of endometrium and the score of premenstrua mammary swelling pain were observed before insertion ,six months and 12 months after insertion respectively . Results After insertion of LNG-IUS, the scores of their dysmenorrhea , dyspareunia , chronic pelvic pain and premenstrua mammary swelling pain dropped very significantly (P<0.05).Their menstrual blood loss , the serum CA125 level and the thickness of endometrium were decreased significantly(P<0.05).The level of Hemoglobin increased significantly (P<0.05). The uterine volume , the score of facial hyperpigmentation and hair , pelvic cyst volume and weight had no marked change(P > 0.05). At 12 months after application of LNG-IUS,there are 23.73 % of the subjects with intermenstrual bleeding. Conclusion LNG-IUS is an effective and safe method in treatment of endometriosis and adenomyosis . Intermenstrual bleeding is the main side effect.
