In the background of a market economy and a reform of the national medicare system, and in the process of a transition from the bio-medical model to the bio-psycho-socio-medical model, there has emerged a great gap between doctor and patient as to the understanding of their respective roles, rights, obligations and interest and consequently a great difference in their demands. In the reallocation of interest both sides emphasize their own rights and hope to grab the largest quantities of rights. Such a pursuit of interest to the uttermost will inevitably result in a conflict of interest, causing an unprecedentedly tense doctor-patient relationship. Starting from an analysis of the social characteristics of doctor's and patient's subject roles, this thesis, with the help of sociological theories of stratification, conflict and exchange, first explores the composition of interest relationship between doctor and patient in present China and analyses the social factors that bear on doctor's and patient's interest, such as the functioning mechanism of market economy, the coming-into-being of a "stranger" society, the change with time of ethic connotations of medicine, the fast development and application of high technology in medicine, the imperfect system of medical laws, and the standpoint of public opinion. Then the thesis sums up the characteristics and the outward forms of the conflict of interest between doctor and patient, delves into the deep social causes of such a conflict, and finally comes up with solutions to such problems.
