Propelling army modernization is based on winning future informationzed war. It is very important to research and study the characteristics and regularity of the engineering army in new circumstances, as well as step up the training of new type military talents. It is a general rule of engineering army at all times and in all countries that to rule army should rule men first and to rule men should rule mind first. During conscription in winter 2006, psychological test has been popularized and employed so that the youth who hasn't healthy mind and psychology has been controlled and forbidden to enter into the troop. Through examining the state of the mental health of new soldiers, the characteristics of personality development, whether the adaptability in a troop is better than before and the main factor of effecting new soldiers'adaptability in a troop, it has theoretical and realistic significance in enhancing aim and validity of new soldiers'psychological work and in improving the overall quality of officers and men and fighting capacity of the troops. PurposeIt strengthens the aim and validity of psychological education and training work and provides theoretical evidence to improve the management level and training efficiency in a troop, by testing and questioning the mental health state and personality characteristics of new soldiers with questionnaire, understanding mental health state and characteristic of new soldier, analyzing main influential factors of new soldiers'adaptability and putting forward constructive suggestions.Subject325 new soldiers from one department recruited arm in Dec. 2006. Method1. 325 recruits and 350 veterans were tested separately with basic condition, mental health and personality characteristics by self-compiled questionnaire, SCL-90, MBTI.2. Company cadre passed comprehensive on recruits'adaptability in a troop, in accordance with performance of various aspects with regard to training, work and study in a month.3. Test data were counted and conducted by SPSS13.0 software. Statistical method is as follows: descriptive statistics test,χ2 test, square analysis and multiple steady regression analysis.Results1. SCL-90 various factorial scores of recruits are lower than Chinese Norm, Chinese Army Norm and Chinese New Soldiers Norm. Compared with veterans, SCL-90 various factorial scores of recruits are lower than veterans. The difference of SCL-90 various factorial scores of recruits'adaptability don't have statistical significance in different troop. 2. The difference of new and old soldiers'personality type distribution have statistical significant. Compared with veterans, the higher scores for recruits'each MBT1factor are E (Extroversion) and J (Judgment) factor. The factor obvious lower scores are I (Introversion), N (Intuition), F (Feeling) and P (cognition) factor. Both the difference of recruit personality type distribution and the scores difference of the MBT1 each factor have no statistical significance.3. Other factors had different degree correlation with SCL-90, except T (Thought) and F (Feeling) factor in recruits MBT1.4. New soldiers` culture degree, whether or not the single child, income level of parents have significant influence on recruit adaptability.Conclusion1. Recruits psychological symptom is not obvious and general level mental health is better. Compared with veterans, the mental health state of recruits are better.2. The proportion of personality type of recruits with ESTJ and ESFJ has increased. General personality characteristics of recruits are: they are fond of getting energy from interpersonal, enthusiastic, and cooperative, great organization discipline, sense of time, be conform to closed management in a troop. However, they have no great emergency ability, decisive, distinguish between right and wrong, intellect concentration, follow orders, obey orders, and perform a task with resolution. They met soldiers'responsibility demand, but they act rashly meanwhile they have no careful and thoughtful consideration before they handle affairs.3. There is certain correlation between the testing results of SCL-90 and MBTI. The more the recruits are extroversion, brave and good self-control, the less opportunity they have mental health problem compared with those who are introversion, hesitation, bad-control. The adaptability of latter is stronger.4. At the same level recruits with higher culture degree, non-single child, and better income level of parents have stronger adaptability.5. Managerial staff in military unit should strengthen aim of psychological work to make new soldiers'crisis consciousness more competitive, to foster creative consciousness, to keep better mental health state and to improve adaptability in a troop through adopt three combination methods of study & training, management & education and psychological education & psychological training.
