[Background]Chronic non-communicable diseases had been thought highly of bypeople while traditional communicable diseases such as tuberculosis stillhad threatened human's health heavily. Which was more dangerous? The health authorities had to assess the burden caused by these diseasesand to decide how to allocate limited health resources. But orthodox indexes used could not reflect overall burden ofdiseases and their results could not been compared directly betweendiseases. The health decision-makers need new and comprehensiveindex. The index of Disability Adjusted life years, took lives lost bydisability into account. In addition, disability weight and age weight werebrought into its construction. Moreover, rate of discount was thoughtbecause the value of future lost should been discounted. These characteristics decided the index of Disability Adjusted lifeyears is equitable, comparable and comprehensive.[Objective]The goal of study was to measure the disease burden of tuberculosisin China in 2003 using the index of Disability Adjusted life years and toprovide more helpful information to health decision-makers.[Methods]Through survey in literatures, age-specified fatality of tuberculosisand population data in China were got. Then we could calculate the valueof DALY of tuberculosis using the formula recommended by WHO.[Results]It was found that 833367 health life lost were lost due totuberculosis. The groups aged 35-74 took account of 83% of totaldisease burden. Moreover, male and rural tuberculotic patients had boremore disease burden than female and urban ones respectively.[Conclusion]The index of Disability Adjusted life years included moresignification than orthodox indexes and had been applied worldwidely. We thought it should be employed in national regular disease surveillancesystem and studies about many severe diseases should be enhanced in the field.
