Objective: To understand the personality characteristic of the baccalaureate nursing students (BNS) and compare the BNS' personality characteristic and the standard of social personality and the requirement nursing personality traits, and to explore the influence of professional factors on BNS' personality characteristic, and provide scientific evidence for BNS' personality education.Methods: 200 BNS from grade 2000 to 2004 in the nursing school of Central South University were recruited by using stratified random sampling, A self-designed demographic and relevant profession factors questionnaire, Occupation expectation and Professional value questionnaire, 16-PF were used in this survey.Results: 1. 162 BNS accepted the investigation, 2 of these questionnaires incompletely were wiped out, at last 160 questionnaires data were obtained.2. 71.2 percent of 160 BNS enrolled in nursing arranged by the university, 39.1% of BNS don't like nursing in that they are not interested in nursing and the low social status of nurses, 42.6 percent of BNS want to change their major. No statistical differences were found in the willing of major and the professional emotion of different grades BNS (P>0.05) .3. The occupation expectations of majority BNS are high incomes, graceful working environment, good welfare and the educated chances. Majority BNS view nursing as a stable occupation, altruism, highly individual quality, specialized skill and knowledge, and low social status.4. More than 40% of 160 BNS got over 7 points in H, F, and Q4 of the 16PF, and more than 30% 160 BNS scored points lower than 4 in G, L, C of the 16PF. Statistical significance were showed in 13 of the 16PF primary personality traits, 6 second-stratum personality factors between the 160 BNS and Normal College Student Population(P<0.001). C, G, and A of the 16PF are the main differences between BNS' personality characteristics and social personality standard and the personality traits nursing professional required.5. The statistical difference of 8 primary personality traits and 5 second-stratum personality factors were showed among different grades BNS (P<0.05) . Correlation relationship were showed between BNS' professional emotion, willing of changing their major and 4 primary personality traits (P<0.05) . Inner and outer motivation of occupation expectation has significant correlation with 6 primary personality traits(P<0.05) . But Professional value has no statistical correlation with BNS' characteristic factors (P>0. 05) . Conclusion: 1. BNS' personality characteristics showed a trend to be high level in H, F, Q4, and low one in G, L, C of the 16PF.2. The main differences are C, G, A of the 16 PF between BNS' personality characteristics and social personality standard and the personality traits nursing professional required.3. Length of college education contributes to the formation of BNS' personality traits.4. BNS' professional emotion and professional thought impact on their personality traits.5. Inner and outer motivation of BNS' occupation expectation has influence on their personality traits.6. BNS' Professional value has no significant influence on their personality traits.
