| Objective: KAI1 gene was a metastasis suppressor gene which was found in 1995.The expression of KAI1 appeared to be reduced in a number of human tumors, includingbreast, lung and prostatic carcinomas. We examined the immunohisto- chemical stainingcharacteristics of KAI1 protein in human laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas andmetastasis lymph nodes, and attemp to find out the association between expression ofKAI1 gene and the metastasis of laryngeal carcinomas.Method: By using immunohistochemical S-P technique, we studied the expressionofKAI1 in 40 laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma specimens,13 metastasis lymph nodesspecimens and 30 vocal cord polyps with monoclonal antibody of KAI1.Correlations ofexpression of KAI1 gene to clinicopathologic factors were statistically analyzed.Result: The positive rate of KAI1 in vocal cord polyp, laryngeal squamous cellcarcinoma and metastasis lymph node were 93.33%(28/30),62.5% (25/40), 30.77%(4/13) respectively, and the differences were significant statistically(P<0.05). Exprssionof KAI1 gene was related to the clinical stage(P<0.05).There was no relativity betweenthe expression of KAI1 gene and the patients' gender, the patients'age, the primary site of tumor or the lymphatic metastasis(P>0.05).But the degree ofpositive expression of KAI1 gene was related to the lymphatic metastasis. Conclusion: There is significantly reduced expression of KAI1 gene in metastasislymph nodes compared with in laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas.KAI1 gene may playa role in the metastasis of laryngeal carcinomas. |
