Objective To investigate the influence of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) on thesignal conduction mechanisms of transformation, immigration and multiplication ofvascular smooth muscle cell in rabbit carotid atheroselerosis. Methods Rabbits were randomly divided into three groups: normal group(n=12), control group (n=12) surgical group (n=12) and ATRA treated group(n=12). The other three groups were fed on high-cholesterol diet and control groupwas made into carotid atherosclerosis model by airing after two weeks. The ATRAtreated group was fed on all-trans retinoic acid. On the 14th day and 28th day, thetarget vessels were taken out, PKCα,MAPK and C-fos were observed byimmtmostaining. The carotid arteries were harvested weeks after the operation. Results Proliferation degree and expression level of PKCα,MAPK and C-fosof endomembrane of treated group are respectively lower (P<0.05) and higher (P<0.05) than operated group, which are observed morphologically. Conclusion The results indicate that ATRA treatment can inhibit athero-sclerosis progression by inhibiting the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells. The mechanism may relates to inhibition of the expression of PKCα,MAFK and C-fosin vascular smooth muscle cells.
