The eighteen incompatible medicaments, the nineteen medicaments of mutual restraint and the contraindication during pregnancy, which the practitioners have been abiding by, have a long history. They are mentioned in the ancient medicinal works, modern pharmacopoeia, specific books and text books. They are the rules and basis that the clinical treatment of CTM and Chinese drugs dispensing in different times must be based on. But in every dynasty there are some people who treat the patients despite these taboos and theory is divorced from practice. In the 50s some researchers began to use the modern experimental method to reexamine them, but many results are self-contradictory. It is still in doubt whether they are absolutely taboos, in the light of which, my paper specially deals with the question in order to get at the truth where lies the essence of the eighteen incompatible medicaments, the nineteen medicaments of mutual restraint and the contraindication during pregnancy. This paper includes two parts. The first part tells something about the historical development of the eighteen incompatible medicaments, the nineteen medicaments of mutual restraint and the contraindication during pregnancy. The part mainly puts in order the documents of CTM, demonstrates their come-into-being and development in the form of formulas, and makes clear the whole process of their development. The second part deals with the practice verification and the theory analysis. By organizing the data of clinical practice and modern experimental research, in my paper I analyze the attitudes of practitioners in the past dynasties toward the eighteen incompatible medicaments, the nineteen medicaments of mutual restraint and the contraindication during pregnancy. I also analyze the historical reasons why the eighteen incompatible medicaments, the nineteen medicaments of mutual restraint and the contraindication during pregnancy come into being, how they develop and the effects the Chinese traditional culture has on them. I strip off the unscientific part of them to guide the clinical medication and to help the development of CTM.I think the questions formed in history must be answered from history.
