Obesity, which has severely influenced people's health, has been defined as an epidemic disease in the world. Therefore, the studies of obesity and its mechanisms have become an urgent duty in the 21st century. Clinical and experiential researches have proved the Chinese traditional medicines could depress serum lipid and weight. Researches have reported fructus psoraleae can accommodate lipid metabolism and no reports have been available at home and abroad about animal experiments of effects of fructus psoraleae on weight reduction. Therefore we observed the effects of fructus psoraleae on ovariectomized obese rats.The model of ovariectomized rats can imitate the physiology of the menopause women. In the experiment, female SD rats had been excised ovaries in order to make the models of obesity. We studied the effects of fructus psoraleae on ovariectomized obese rats and their metabolisms in order to give theoretical evidence to the prevention and cure of obese menopause women.The 24 female SD rats, whose weights were 220±2g, were randomly divided into three groups:(1) ovariectomized group (OVX) (2) sham operated group(SHAM) (3)fructus psoraleae group(OVX+FP), 8 rats every group. After 12 hours fasting, the rats of OVX group and OVX+FP group were excised their ovaries. But the rats of SHAM group were excised fatty tissue near the ovaries. After operations, the rats of OVX group and SHAM freely drank water while those of OVX+FP group drank 12% fructus psoraleae water extract freely until 55 days. All of rats were fed with basic feedstuff in the second day. The food-intake and water-intake were measured in some time every day and reported. The weights of all rats were measured once every 6 days and reported. In the end of 55 days, the weights of all rats were weighed, fasted 12 hours, took blood from femoral artery, measuring the level of blood glucose(GLU) at the same time and measured their stem lengths. After all of the serum were centrifuged ,we measured the levels of insulin(INS), estrogen, triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC), high density lipoprotein(HDL),low density lipoprotein(LDL),alanine minotransferase(ALT), aspartate. aminotransferase(AST), maleic dialdehyde(MDA), total anti-oxidation competence(T-AOC),leptin,interleukin-6(IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and calculated Lee's index.All of experimental data were handled with SPSS 10.0 software and are expressed as mean±SD. Differences with P < 0.05 were considered statistical significance.The main experimental results are that the weights, food-intakes, Lee's indexes and the levels of TG, TC, LDL,HDL, MDA, Leptin and TNF-αof ovariectomized rats were higher than those of shamoperated rats. After the rats in OVX+FP group drank 12% of fructus psoraleae water extract, the weights, Lee's indexes and the levels of TG, MDA, leptin and TNF-αdecreased. Moreover, the food-intakes of the rats in OVX+FP group were lower than those of the rats in SHAM group.
