Objective1. To calculate the burden of stroke among urban and rural residents in Liaoning province using DALYs(Disability adjusted life years).2. To assess the burden of stroke among urban and rural residents in Liaoning province.MethodsStratified multi-stage cluster randomization was used to identify 3 cities(Shenyang, Anshan, Fuxin) and 3 countries(Dawa, Qingyuan, Zangwu) and 21596 subjects. The respondents were visited by lay interviewers at their home and conducted a face-to-face interview. According to American National Health Interview Survey methods stroke was affirmed by self-reported.The method of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD2000) study was used to calculate the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) of stroke.DALYs are the sum of the years of life lost because of premature mortality in the population and the years lived with disability. DALYs=YLLs+YLDs。The formula for calculating the DALYs is:The incidence of stroke is rarely measured. To derive the incidence, we calculated it from one-year prevalence, mortality, case fatality and duration using DisMod software. Other parameters such as disability weight comes from the estimated of GBD to China. ResultsA total of 19104(88.46%of the eligible subjects) agreed to participate in the study and were successfully interviewed, and among whom there were 424 who were stroke. The prevalence of stroke in Liaoning province in 2003 were 2219/10~5, the standardized rate was 1074/10~5, significantly higher for males than females (2550/10~5 vs 1896/10~5) and in urban area than in rural area (3259/10~5 vs 1444/10~5).The mortality of stroke in Liaoning province in 2003 were 123/10~5, the standardized rate was 74/10~5, significantly higher for males than females (140/10~5 vs 105/10~5) and in rural area than in urban area (142/10~5 vs 118/10~5).The DALYs per 1000 population of stroke in Liaoning province were 17.2 per 1000 in 2003, significantly higher for males than females (20.2 vs 14.1) and in rural area than in urban area (18.8 vs 14.1).Conclusion1. The DALYs of stroke in Liaoning province is 1.6 times than that of China estimated by GBD2000.2. Counties and males are emphasis of stroke prevention and control.
