Objective: Patients suffered from hypersensitive diseases had increased rapidly every year because of the severe air pollution and change of eating habit. The commonly-seen hypersensitive diseases include allergic rhinitis, allergic eye conjunctivitis, habitual aphtha, asthma and ectopic dermatitis, etc. However, allergic rhinitis is the most typical and common disease among hypersensitive diseases, and patients with allergic rhinitis also account for the most, especially children. In the clinic of pediatric chronic diseases, it takes the highest ratio. Children with allergic rhinitis often look listless at the first sight in the clinic, their eye rings are black, and there are voices of clearing throat now and then. These children usually sneeze in the morning, and it's easy to have a stuffy nose while sleeping at night. In addition, the reverse flow of nasal discharge and obstruction of sputum at the throat may causes coughs in the middle of the night, with the result that sleeping time is reduced. Parents also make a response that the children are bad-tempered with impaired concentration. All of these are the common manifestations of children with allergic rhinitis in the clinic. The typical clinical symptoms of allergic rhinitis includes itching of eyes and nose, sneeze, nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, speak with nasal sound, and some patients may feel itching of throat and auditory meatus, even dizziness and distention of head. For this reason, patients usually are unable to concentrate, which may affect their work or lessons. Some patients often accompany with paranasal sinusitis, dysfunction of Eustachian canal, malfunction of smell, sleeping disturbance, as well as all kinds of complications due to the respiration by mouth for a long time. All these puzzle the patients greatly. Although the medication of western medicine is rapid, its side-effects are huge, and the long-term effect is poor. Therefore, there are many patients seeking for treatments of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and there are many styles of TCM therapy, such as oral taking of Chinese herbal, acupuncture, acupoint catgut embedding, point in(?)ection, point application, massage, and so on. There are so many therapeutic methods, but a lot of children can not accept and take medicine on time, which affects the effect. In order to search for a method that is easy to be accepted by children with little side-effect, and combined with the therapy of the so-called "winter diseases are treated in summer", point application is used to deal with pediatric allergic rhinitis. This method has been recorded in many medical books in the past. Now it' s hoped to use this way to provide a kind of effective therapy proved by scientific methods. Methods: About 90 children with allergic rhinitis from 5 to 15 years old were taken as the study objects in the clinic, and they were randomly divided into: (1)Point application group: Bailao, Fengmen (both sides), Feishu (both sides), Mingmen and Shenshu (both sides) were selected. Apply the ointment to the above points, fix by adhesive tape, and maintain for 1 to 1.5 hour (depends on the tolerance level of children). Start from first dog-days, and continue to apply once during middle dog-days and last dog-days respectively. The course was about 1 month. The powder herb contains Guizhi 30%, Fuzi 30%, Baijiezi 20%, Suzi 10%, Xixin 10%, and it was mixed with ginger juice. (2) Medicine group: Xiao Qing Long Decoction (powder) in Shang Han Lun was used. The medication was 3 times per day, 2.5g per time for 5-7 years old, 3g for 8-15 years old. The course was 1 month. (3) Placebo group: Bailao, Fengmen (both sides), Feishu (both sides), Mingmen and Shenshu (both sides) were selected. Apply the ointment to the above points, fix by adhesive tape, and maintain for 1 to 1.5 hour (depends on the tolerance level of children). Start from first dog-days, and continue to apply once durirg middle dog-days and last dog-days respectively. The course was about 1 month. The medicine was completely made of flour, and mixed by boiled water. The above three groups were observed to see whether they have effects on allergic rhinitis. Results: As to the application group, medicine group and placebo group, the numbers of excellent effect of the three groups are 13, 6 and 0 respectively, the effective numbers are 10, 6 and 1 respectively, and the invalid numbers are 7, 18 and 29 respectively. After Ridit analysis, X~2=25.73182 (P<0.01), it has significant difference and statistical meaning. The effective rate of application group is 76.66%, while that of the medicine group is 40%, and the placebo group is 3.33%. It indicated that the effect of application group is better than that of the medicine group and placebo group. Conclusions: The results of this clinical study confirmed the effects of point application on children allergic rhinitis. Its mechanism indicated that the meridian system is communicated with organs and limbs exteriorly and interiorly, and it has the function of promoting qi and blood, harmonizing Yin and Yang, nourishing tendons and bones, smoothing joints and warming muscular striae, so as to get the effect of treating children allergic rhinitis via the stimulation of medicine on points and the regulation of meridians, qi and blood. As to the increased number of children with allergic rhinitis recently, this kind of simple, convenient and easy accepted treatment is deserved to be applied in the clinic during the treatment of children allergic rhinitis. This is also the biggest gains of this clinical study, and it is hoped to be helpful to those children troubled by allergic rhinitis and their parents.
