Objective: To investigate the radioprotective effects from plateau natural herbs of Yunnan province on mice. Methods: In the experiments, the mice were randomly divided into five groups: normal control group, irradiating group, low dose group, median dose group and high dose group. In the three experiment groups, different doses of medicine was administrated into the stomachs of the mice. Other mice were given physiological brine. The radiation-injured models of mice exposed to 60Co-γrays at a dose of 6Gy were applied to evaluate the radioprotective effects of plateau natural herbs of Yunnan province. In the experiments, body weight of mice, erythrocyte, leukocyte, platelet count in peripheral blood, bone marrow DNA content, number of karyota of femur in mice, spleen index and thymus index, and endogenous spleen colony forming unit were measured after irradiation. Results: (1)In the experiment of the alcoholic extract of Herba Leonuri, different doses of medicine was administrated into the stomachs of the mice. In the three experiment groups, the leukocytes and erythrocytes were higher than those in the irradiating control group(p<0. 05), and the platelet counts were higher than those in the irradiating control group(p<0. 01). The bone marrow DNA contents and the numbers of karyota of femui in the low dose group were higher than those in the irradiating control group (p<0. 05). The bone marrow DNA contents and the numbers of karyota of femui in the median and high dose group were higher than those in the irradiating control group(p<0.01). (2)In the experiment of the alcoholic extract of Herba Pyrolae, the numbers of karyota of femui and the spleen indexes in the median dose group were higher : than those in the irradiating control group(p<0. 05). The leukocytes, the bone marrow DNA contents, the numbers of karyota of femui, the spleen indexes and the spleen colony forming units in the high dose drug group were higher than those in the irradiating group(p<0. 05). The thymus indexes in the median and high dose groups were higher than those in the irradiating control group(p<0. 01).Conclusion:(1)The alcoholic extract of Herba Leonuri can promote the recovery of hematological function of 60Co-γrays irradiated mice. (2)The alcoholic extract of Herba Pyrolae has radioprotective effect to immune system of mice.
