Objective: As thymic carcinoma is a rare neoplasm, imformation regarding its result of treatment and possible prognostic factors are limited. We are to investigate the clinical features of thymic carcinoma so as to improve the diagnosis and treatment outcome. Methods: Fourteen patients of thymic carcinoma, surgically intervened and pathologically confirmed in Shandong Provincial Hospital through January 2005 to March 2007,were retrospectively analysed. Fourteen patients were classified according to the Masaoka satging criteria:stage â…  1 patient, stage â…¡3 patients , stage â…¢4 and stage â…£a 6. Nine patients underwent gross total resection,3 had subtotal resection, and 2 had exploratory thoracotomy and biopsy alone. Results: In this series there was no perioperative death. The pathological findings were squamous cell carcinoma in 7,neuroendocrine carcinoma in 4,adencarcinoma in 1.Through 2 to 23 months follow-up,there was no postoperative recurrence, metastasis and death. Conclusions: As to thymic carcinoma with higher malignant degree and invasiveness, surgical resection of the tumor and adjuvant therapy can get better result.
