| Brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF), a member of neurotrophic factor family, is a samll size protein, which was firstly characterized from pig brain by Barde, a Germany neurobiologist, in 1982. BDNF is a potent neurotrophic factor that promotes the survival, morphological differentiation and growth of neurons in the development of central nervous syetem, and sustains the survival and function of the nervous syetem. Also BDNF can promote the regeneration of the impaired neurons. When cerebral ischemia happens, without any interference of extrinsic factor on the organism, BDNF can promote the recovery and regeneration of the impaired neurons, the adjustment of neuromechanism reconstruction, and the functional recovery of cognition. While the capability of organism compensation is limited and the duration is short, and accompanying cerebral ischemia lasting, the expression of endogenous BDNF gradually degrades, and the reparative process of neurocyte and its subsequent growth needs long tine, the up-regulation of the expression of endogenous BDNF and its receptor, an amino acids basal enzyme receptor, is not sufficient to prevent and cure the cerebral ischemia and the following cell death. But considerable experiments indicated that exogenous BDNF has the same function and activity as the endogenous BDNF. It will be a potent therapeutics to cerebral ischemic injury following delivery of exogenous BDNF to the brain. |
