Objective To investigate the changes of plasma Apelin level and the relationship between plasma apelin levels and body mass index (BMI), HOMA-insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR), blood glucose, blood fat, plasma insulin levels as well as other factors in the population with different glucose tolerances. Methods Plasma apelin levels in the fasting and glucose overload 2h were assayed by ELISA in the patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) , and controls. The relationship between plasma apelin levels and BMI,HOMA-IR, blood fat, blood glucose, plasma insulin levels was also analyzed. Results Fasting and glucose overload 2h plasma apelin levels in IGT group were significantly increased compared with controls (498±35 vs.389±17和593±46 vs.441±26 pg/ml,P<0.05 ). The levels of apelin in obese subjects were significantly higher than that in non-obese subjects (P< 0.01). Plasma apelin levels correlated positively with HOMA-IR,BMI,TC,LDL-C,FBG and Fasting plasma insulin (r=0.48, r=0.37,r=0.35, r=0.35,all P<0.01, and r=0.32, r=0.254,both P<0.05). Multiple regression analysis showed that HOMA-IR,BMI and TC were independent related factors for plasma apelin levels. Conclusion The changes of apelin levels are associated with obesity,...
