ObjectiveLooked through postpartum women's knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) among perinatal period, the study will learn the situation and the needs for quality of maternal care so as to provide the basic maternal care information and to improve the perinatal care service.The objectives include: (1) Antenatal care: to learn the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) with antenatal visits, health education and sexual health; (2) health care in delivery: to examine the KAP with delivery; (3) Post partum health care: to study the KAP with breastfeeding and contraception.MethodsThe study included quantitative study (cross-sectional study) and qualitative study (focus group discussions). 826 women who were within 7 days after delivery have been selected in 9 hospitals in Beijing from October to December 2003. Adopted the descriptive epidemiology research method, the interview was carried out with unified questionnares. The database was set up in EPIDATA3.0. After checked up, the data were input in twice and were analyzed in SPSS11.5. 20 women were selected to attending the focus group discussions in 4 groups. After recorded in the process, the materials were transcribed and analized.Results1. Health condition of mothers and babies(1) New mothers' health condition32.3% new mothers ever suffered from the pregnancy-related complications. Most of them were anemia, impaired glucose tolerance, gestation diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disorder complicating pregnancy.(2) Babies' health conditionThe incidence of macrosomia was 8.4%. In 828 newborns, 2.2% had the complications, which mainly included asphyxia of newborn, pneumonia of newborn and jaundice of newborn.
