Objectives To investigate the changes in ocular surface and dioptrics before and after pterygium surgery. Methods For 42 patients (71 eyes ) suffered from pterygium who were divided randomly into group A—pterygium excision combined with amniotic membrane Transplantation(AMT) and group B —pterygium excision and amniotic membrane Transplantation(AMT) combined with mitomycin C (MMC) application in surgery , Conjunctival Impression Cytoloty(CIC) , the Schirmer Test, Tear Break-up Time , Fluorescein Staining , lacrimal river height, corneal topography , retimoscopy and optometry were performed before and after pterygium surgery .Results 1. The Tear Break-up Time and conjunctival goblet cells density were significantly different before and after pterygium surgery in the two groups. When compared with the BUT and conjunctival goblet cells density before surgery, BUT prolonged and conjunctival goblet cells density increased significantly after surgery(P <0.05). 2. Before surgery, the ocular surface morphology diectly over the pterygium was found to be abnormal in 100% of cases, the epithelial cells in pterygium demonstrated squamous metaplasia, with marked enlargement and elongation of the cells and pyknotic changes in the nucleus. After surgery, the epithelial cells in pterygium became regulational, small and intensive, and a lot of inflammatory cells appeared in non-pterygium area within 14days after surgery. 3. In the two groups, the Schirmer Test and lacrimal river height after surgery had no significant difference with the corresponding result before surgery except that the result of the third day after surgery . 4. Fluorescein Staining improved after surgery except the third day post-surgery. 5. The degree of the astigmatism decreased significantly when... |
