Objective: To study the characteristic changes of multifocal VEP in strabismic amblyopes, anisometropic amblyopes and inisometropic amblyopes, in order to evaluate the mechanism of amblyopes and provide a new methods for their diagnosis. Methods: The multifocal pattern VEP of both eyes of 30 stabismic amblypes,30 anisometropic amblyopes,16 inisometropic amblyopes and 15 normal subjects were recorded by RETIscan3.20.17Science multifocal visual evoked response imagin system. The latencies and amplitudes of P waves were analysied. Changes in different retinal area were investigated by comparing the amblyopic eye, the fellow eye of the patients and the normal eyes.Results:1. In the central region the N1-P and P-N2 amplitudes of mfVEP of the strabismic amblyopic and anisometropic amblyopic eyes were reduced compared with the fellow eyes and the normal eyes. In the central region the N1-P and P-N2 amplitudes of mfVEP of the inisometropic amblyopic eyes were reduced compared with the normal eyes.2. In strabismic amblyopia eyes and anisometropic amblyopic eyes the latencies of mfVEP were markedly prolonged. In inisometropic amblyopic eyes the latencies of mfVEP were markedly prolonged too.3.no significant differences were found among different degrees of amblyopic eyes in mfVEP.Conclusions:1.The visual function of amblyopic eyes is reduced more significantly in the central region than in the peripheral region of the visual field.2.In amblyopia eyes, disfunction and morphology disorder may be exist through the full visual pass from the ganglion cells to the visual cortex but not a solo lamina.3.Components Ni and N2 of mfVEP originated from different anatomic cells.4.The results suggest that mfVEP could be used in instructing the diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia.
