Objective: To compare the clinical effect and quality of life(QoL) in lumbar disc herniation patients treated according to integration of Chinese medicine and western medicine with that of surgery. And assess the curative effect of lumbar disc herniation patients with QOL instruments.Methods : We used both retrospective cohort study to have this research. Eighty lumbar disc herniation patients in Guangzhou University of TCM from 2003 January to 2005 April were allocated in the the study, which are divided into groups treated with Chinese medicine and western medicine-non-surgical groups(40 cases), and groups treated with surgery(40 cases). We evaluate the effect before and after the treatment with SF-36, appling the rigorous mathematical statistic methods, and investigate the effects and QOL between 2 therapies by physical functioning, role-physical, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, role-emotionaland mental health.Results:1. comparision before and after the treatment within the group: the points between non-surgerical group and surgerical group had a significant difference(P<0.05);2. the points in Two groups have rised in the aspects of physical functioning, role-physical,bodily pain(the points>50),but the aspects of vitality, social functioning and mental health are indistinctive (the points<30);3. bettering degree bteween 2 groups: In the aspects of physical functioning,role-physical and bodily pain , there was a higher point in surgerical group, and it' s indistinctive (P>0. 05). But in the aspects of vitality, social functioning, role-emotional and mental health, there was a higher point in non-surgerical group, and there' s a significant deiierence in the aspects of vitality, social functioning and mental health(P<0.05).The degree for bettering the condition of holistic health is adjacent.Conclusion:1. Two therapies is effective in lumbar disc herniation patients on QOL. Clinicians can select the proper treatment scheme according to the patient' s condition.2. Two groups had a significant effect in th aspects of physical functioning, role-physical, bodily pain, but the aspects of vitality, social functioning and mental health are indistinctive. So clinicians should enhance the psychological and mental tutoring when bettering the physical functioning and alleviating the symptoms.3. In the aspects of vitality, social functioning and mental health , there was significant difference between the two groups, and non-surgerical group have an advantage over the orher groups. So the surgerical criterion should be grasped strictly.
