Objective: To investigate the role of IGF-1, IGFBP-1 and leptin in the genesis and development of fetal growth restriction(FGR), and the relationship between these cytokines and fetal growth restriction. Methods: The maternal serum IGF-1, IGFBP-1 and leptin were measured byimmunoradiometric assay in 38 woman with FGR and 38 normal pregnant women, matched for maternal age, parity, BMI and gestational age at sampling. Maternal demographic data, such as maternal height and weight, and neonatal birth weight were recorded. The correlations between the serum IGF-1 , IGFBP-1 and leptin levels and the above clinical index were analyzed by the correlative and regression analysis. Results: In patients with FGR, serum levels of IGF-1 were lower, and IGFBP-1 were higher, respectively, than control groups(P<0.01). The leptin concentrations were not significantly different among women with FGR and normal pregnant women. The level of leptin was positively correlated with maternal BMI. There were significant difference in the frequency of prenatal care between the FGR and the control groups(P<0.01). Ponderal index (PI) was significantly correlated with pregnancy weight gain, gestational age, birth weight, neonatal head circumference and IGF-1 level. PI had a significantly inverse correlation with IGFBP-1 level. In multiple regression analyses, IGFBP-1 level and pregnancy weight gain were significantly independent factors in determination of...
