Background and ObjectiveCerebral edema is intra-cerebral hypertension (ICH) syndrome caused by excessive fluid concentration in the brain, always accompanied with neurological defects, clumsy, memory degeneration, which can cause death due to cerebral hernia. Because cerebral edema and neuron death is the main cause of neurological defects, and neuron death is irreversible, preventing and treating cerebral edema is the main task in clinics.Cerebral edema is divided into two kinds in pathological way, cytotoxic edema and vasogenic brain edema (VBE). In fact, two kinds of edema always co-exist instead of exists separately. Cytotoxic edema is also known as intracellular type, which means fluid passes into cells accompanied with decreasd extracellular space, which cannot increase cerebral volume significantly and is not the main cause of brain swelling. So in the deterioration process of clinical condition, cytotoxic edema plays less important role than VBE. VBE is a kind of common edema in clinics, which is always accompanied with cerebral vascular disease, encephalitis, brain tumor, brain trauma. VBE is caused by leaking out of protein and water from capillaries through damaged blood-brain barrier(BBB),it is protein- rich edema and white matter condition is serious than gray matter. Because full of protein, it is a hard and long duration to be absorbed, which always causes ICH, cerebral hernia and death. The process and severity of VBE plays a determined part in prognosis of disease and the main cause of clinical deterioration.
